So, what’s it about?
You know the drill by now. Somebody has a weird vision of an impending disaster and instead of just ignoring it like a rational person, they save a bunch of people’s lives just for Death to track them down because he’s an obsessive completionist.
Anyone I know in it?
This movie carries on the fine Final Destination tradition of casting a bunch of absolute nobodies. The only person who was even a little familiar to me was Richard Harmon who plays the hottie tattoo artist, Erik, but that’s just because I really liked The 100. Well, I liked the first couple seasons anyway (IYKYK). Oh, and let’s not forget the horror mack daddy himself, Mr. Tony Todd, coming in to make his final and most memorable appearance in the franchise after being unceremoniously snubbed in the 4th movie.
Is it any good?
Holy fucking shitballs this was actually really good!! I came into this with pretty much no knowledge of the plot (didn’t really think I needed to since I just watched the other 5 and definitely noticed a pattern) and was pleasantly surprised at the way they were able to shake things up without straying too far from what the franchise is all about, a bunch of dumb fucks getting absolutely wrecked in weird ways. I always imagine death is a big, dumb himbo in these movies and I love the idea of him fucking up so bad that he’s stuck playing catch-up for DECADES. This movie fixes a lot of issues I had in the previous films, too. For one, I actually like and care about these characters. There’s an actual arc beyond “idiots try not to die” AND no one annoys the piss out of me! Another fix is that it doesn’t take them the entire movie to finally believe the main character. Pretty much 2 deaths in and everyone’s all in on the “Death is coming to get us” train which leaves so much more time for mayhem. Also, I love that they gave Tony Todd’s character some backstory and finally explained why he seems to know everything about Death’s little games. More than that, they gave him a proper sendoff for what they all knew would be his last role and gave him a chance to say a heartfelt goodbye directly to his fans. Woof, is someone chopping onions in here?… Anyway, I’d still love for them to give some sort of explanation as to why people are getting these premonitions to begin with because that never made sense to me. I’m not usually a fan of way too late sequels but this movie has everything you could ever want! Laughs, gore, generational trauma, Prince Albert piercings! I hope this isn’t the final destination for this franchise (I’m so sorry, I HAD to, it was right there!) because this really opens the door for them to get a lot more creative with this format and I really wanna see what they come up with next.
Anything else like it?
Bruh. There are 5 other movies. Go watch those. In the reviews of the first 5 I also recommended the Saw movies for the gore hounds out there, but if you’re looking for something a little more engaging, something with some gnarly visuals but a decent (but not too thinky) plot, I might give Smile and Smile 2 a go.
